I think the direction of travel is permanent and that without a change in the voting system the Tories will get nowhere near running the country ever again. Although Major started moving the Tories from centre-right to the centre it accelerated under Cameron and became more centre-left. Personally, I think the old labels of right, left etc are no longer relevant as many people, like me, nowadays have and encompass a range of views that cut across the polictical spectrum.
